I was fairly surprised by a stat which appeared in Tony Masseroti’s piece in the Globe today on the wane in interest in all thing Red Sox, namely this:
NESN viewership dropped by nearly 20 percent last year.
I was not expecting such a sharp decline in interest in the team following Modern Era Championship Number Two. Could it be that these people were finally forced to watch one too many commercial for Sox Appeal? Doubtful. That 20% was the target demo for such stellar output from the Red Sox Marketing Dept. This drop in interest in the team also isn’t really being reflected in reduced ticket prices (though the team DID freeze prices on most seats for this season). Viz: Loge seats down the left field corner still go for $165 a pop for a Thursday night game against the lowly Royals.
It will be interesting to see what effect this reduced viewership has during the course of the season. I’ll be paying particular attention to whether or not this manifests itself in reduced attendance in Fort Myers when I’m down there in a few weeks blogging for our loyal readership (both of you). Up until this point it has been pretty much SRO since 2003.
