Masterful Masterson

The spot start is a strange phenomenon. It can make or break a young pitcher. And it can become the lot of an old bullpen hand. Justin Masterson performed well today–especially considering the early Marathon Monday start. Consider the line:

    • 5.1 innings pitched, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 2 bases on balls, and 3 Ks.
  • Good stuff.

The Sox, behind Masterson, won their fifth straight game. That means they’ve gone from 2-6 to 7-6. A nice run. They’re tied with the Yankees and are 2.5 games behind Toronto.

I must confess, my new job has kept me occupied, so I haven’t been spending as much time as I’d like watching games and tracking the Sox. So I’ve paid little attention to the Rays, who are occupying the cellar.

    Funny thing.

I thought they might lead the East wire-to-wire. Guess not.

    So much for my predictions.

Not long ago, I thought Wake’s career was over. Then he played stopper and took a no-hitter into the 8th inning.

Well, folks, that’s why they play the games.
