It was only a matter of time, really.
We all knew that one day, a member of the Red Sox…a prominent member…would be implicated in something to do with some sort of Performance Enhancing Drug (officially that is). Well, today is that day. At the time of this writing, it’s unclear exactly what type of substance it was, but in the court of public opinion, that won’t matter much (UPDATE: ManRam may not have been kidding when he said the prescription was of a personal nature).
Red Sox fans must now deal with those (and judging by the #redsox tweet stream today that number is legion) who will scream that we are no better than the Yankees and that the World Series championships of 2004 & 2007 were fraudulently won.
Friends of mine much closer to the workings of professional sports than I have quietly opined for years that it’s generally accepted within baseball that the majority of players have at least dabbled at one time or another, and that a number of key players on both the ’04 and ’07 teams were definitely using PED’s during those championship runs. My opinion is that they are probably right, and that that’s a reality of that (this?) era which we have to accept as much as it tarnishes the image of the game I love.
I’m no less proud today of the championships won by the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007 because I accept that use of these substances was rampant throughout Major League Baseball. So from that perspective, the playing field is, in effect, level (the same cannot be said for the gulf in salaries between the Red Sox and all but a handful of other teams, but that’s another topic for another day). This is simply a sad confirmation of something I think all but the most naive have suspected all along about those teams. Given the rampant use of PED’s in baseball during that period, to think that one team was pure as the driven snow is absurd.
I’m certainly not happy that a member of one of those Red Sox teams has apparently been outed as a user of PED’s, but I’m not surprised either. And to be perfectly honest, it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
What’s your opinion on the following:
1. Will this diminish Manny’s chances to gain entrance into Cooperstown significantly?
2. Do you think he cares?
3. How does this change your feelings about ’07 and (especially) ’04 (if at all)?
